Sybila Valdivieso is Executive Director and Lead Counsel, Healthcare and Privacy Law, for Island Health Authority and the Provincial Health Services Authority, leading privacy and legal teams working with subject matter experts and navigating complex issues spanning health law, privacy, cybersecurity, data governance, research, and technology innovation, including the responsible use of AI to improve patient care. Her interest in AI and robotics was instigated during the COVID‑19 pandemic, informing her contributions to AI policy discussions that balance innovation with strong protections and she has a particular interest in the discourse for upcoming AI regulations. Prior to her work in healthcare, she worked as Counsel to the Law Society of Upper Canada (now Ontario). She values the unique responsibilities of In-House lawyers as gatekeepers supporting organizational strategies while ensuring legal and ethical integrity is maintained. She also works in areas of legal reform and social justice with the Canadian Bar Association and mentors law students and new lawyers.
