Stan Crosley

Director, Indiana University Center for Law, Ethics and Applied Research (CLEAR) in Health Information

Stan Crosley is the Director of the Indiana University Center for Law, Ethics and Applied Research in Health Information (CLEAR), a health information strategy center created through IU’s schools of Law, Medicine and Informatics. Stan is also Counsel to Drinker Biddle & Reath and helps lead the firm’s Data Privacy and Health Information Governance team and is a principal in Crosley Law Offices, LLC. Stan is the former Chief Privacy Officer for Eli Lilly and Company, where he initiated Lilly’s global privacy program in 1998 and served as the CPO until 2010. The program received the 2007 Innovation Award from the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Stan also co-founded and served as Chair of the International Pharmaceutical Privacy Consortium. Stan is a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Medical Research and Privacy Committee, which published the report “Beyond the HIPAA Privacy Rule: Enhancing Privacy, Improving. Health Through Research.” He currently serves on the boards of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, the Indiana Health Informatics Technology, Inc., and The Privacy Projects. Stan is a member of the OECD Advisory Panel of Experts on Health Information and on the Advisory Board for the International Data Privacy Law Journal. He was also a member of the Brookings Institute’s Active Surveillance Implementation Council, which provided guidance to the US FDA on issues surrounding medical product surveillance and the FDA’s Sentinel project. Stan is a frequent speaker/lecturer on health information technology and the future of health information use and research, privacy and data protection, HIPAA/HITECH, EU Data Protection, International privacy and data protection, information governance, and all aspects of operating privacy programs. Stan has appeared in publications such as BNA and the Wall Street Journal, and has been featured in Fast Company and on CNN. Stan is a graduate of Hillsdale College with a BS in Biology/Chemistry and of Indiana University Maurer School of Law – Bloomington, where he received a JD with honors. Stan is married to Melisa and is the proud father of three children (twin teenage girls and a teenage son). He is also a member of the board of Shepherd Community Center, dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty on Indianapolis’ east side, and is active in his church and community.
