Megan Hunt
Executive Director of Primary Care & eHealth, First Nations Health Authority
Megan Hunt is the Executive Director of Primary Care & eHealth. Megan resides in northern BC in the Carrier and Sekani territory. She began her journey with the First Nations Health Authority in 2014 as the Project Director of eHealth, leading the First Nations Telehealth Expansion Project and team. Following this Megan became the Director of eHealth to support the ongoing implementation and transformation of Action Item 23 of the Transformative Change Accord: First Nations Health Plan to create a fully integrated clinical telehealth network. A project of this magnitude was unique and required strategic thought leadership and change management to solution multiple moving project activities and deliverables along with community, regional and provincial partners. An important task coming into this role was to recruit and build the human resource capacity within the project and organization to deliver on Action Item 23 and further develop digital health and wellness opportunities to support First Nations adoption of technology to access equitable, quality, culturally safe and timely health and wellness programs and services in community.
In 2016, she had the honor of working as the Regional Director for the Northern Region to cover a one-year maternity leave. This position provided her with an opportunity to utilize her leadership experience in health and child and family services within Northern Indigenous communities and organizations in a very integrated manner. Megan had the opportunity to provide high level direction and oversight with the northern regional team and 54 First Nation communities, First Nations Health Service Organizations, the regional health authority, community Health Leads and their Elected leadership. Additionally, she was responsible for the development of a strategic operational plan, leading change and managing transitions, leading the motivation and development of direct reporting staff and overall northern team.
Great learning and knowledge was developed with a broader understanding of the importance of regionalization through the delivery of Regional Caucus and Sub-regional sessions; Northern Regional Table and the Northern First Nations Partnership Table. Additionally, she further recognized and appreciated the important interplay and role that our Vancouver home office and associated programs and departments have in helping to achieve healthy and vibrant First Nations children, families and communities. This knowledge was also advanced through having accountability for the overall FNHA community engagement functions including communication and planning with all health system partners, tables, committees and Nations while ensuring regional input was inserted into all senior levels of the FNHA. The experience in working regionally was incredibly rewarding and she was very proud to be a part of the development, innovation and implementation of JPB projects in northern communities such as: Phase 1 Mobile Support Teams (MST), Coastal Primary Care Initiative, Men’s Wellness programs, Crisis Response development, Northern Jordan’s Principal, Northern Respecting Tobacco Strategy, Traditional wellness and Land Based Healing, Integrated Primary Care within Mobile Support Teams, Home Care Assistant Program and other regional and community driven initiatives, conferences and training aligned with the northern region health and wellness plan and associated regional and provincial funding envelopes.
Most recently Megan has held the role of Director of Primary Care and eHealth with responsibility for the strategic leadership and direction to operationalize fully aligned and integrated primary health care and eHealth, including Joint Project Board (JPB), First Nations Led Primary Care Initiatives and the First Nations Virtual Doctor of the Day and the First Nations Virtual Substance Use and Psychiatry program to advance First Nations health and wellness in BC. Having the opportunity to be a part of setting the direction, coordination, facilitation and sustainability of fully integrated primary health care services within the regions, enabled by eHealth programs and services has resulted in baring witness to and being a part of further achieving Indigenous health equity across the province.
In this role, she has provided strategic support in the ongoing development of the FNHA Primary Care ++ model of health services and the important role that building inter-professional team based care plays in the delivery of quality indigenous health services.
