Dr. Darryl Knight – HCS24

Dr. Darryl Knight brings over 20 years’ experience as an academic leader and medical researcher to Providence Health Care (PHC). He obtained his PhD from the University of Western Australia in 1993. In 2004, he was recruited to the University of British Columbia (UBC) and PHC as the Canada Research Chair in Airway Disease. He was recruited back to Australia in 2013 as Head, School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy at the University of Newcastle, before being recruited back to Canada in 2019 as Vice President, Research and Academic Affairs, Providence Health Care, President, Providence Health Care Research Institute, Associate Dean, Research, Faculty of Medicine, UBC and Visiting Professor, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Dr. Knight’s research career has focused on understanding how abnormal epithelial cell-fibroblast interactions influence the severity and chronicity of respiratory diseases and impact on treatment. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters (h-factor 73; 15,750 citations) and is co-inventor on 13 patents. He has a strong track record of obtaining research grant funding (>$25M) and been primary supervisor for seven post-doctoral fellows, 17 PhD and two MSc students and 20 Graduate students. He sits on several journal editorial boards as well as the board of Research Canada. Dr. Knight is passionate about building teams and networks to solve complex health related problems.
