Paul Vane
Deputy Information Commissioner, Office of the Information Commissioner, Jersey (Channel Islands)
Paul was appointed Deputy Information Commissioner for Jersey in 2004 and has witnessed first-hand the Island’s transition and development from the original 1987 Data Protection Law in force at the time of his arrival, right through the former European Directive (95/46/EC) to the new GDPR and 2018 Data Protection Laws. He has a background in regulation, having served as a Police Officer in Jersey for 8 years, before moving to Jersey’s financial services regulator in 2000. Four years later, he decided upon a career change and entered the world of data protection where he has by his own admission, found his niche.
Paul has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Social Policy and Criminology and is passionate about his role in the field of data protection and privacy. He has a deeply entrenched desire to ensure the protection of individual’s information rights, particularly in the digitally driven, globalised world in which we live. He has led the Office of the Information Commissioner through 2 major changes in legislation, and has been instrumental in bringing the organisation through significant growth and re-structure during 2018 in the wake of GDPR and Jersey’s new legislative framework.
Outside of the data protection environment, Paul is a keen drummer and musician and runs his own 10-piece events band, ‘Inside Job’, who during their 11 years together have performed to British Royalty and supported 80’s UK pop giants, Spandau Ballet. At home, Paul lives with his fiancée, Julie and their two Siberian cats.
