John Matheson

Director of Health Finance, eHealth and Analytics, Scottish Government

John Matheson was Director of Finance, eHealth and Analytics within the Scottish Government Health & Social Care Directorates (SGHD) (£13bn budget) from July 2008 until his retiral in January 2016. Prior to that he was Director of Finance within NHS Lothian for 20 years. He was awarded the prestigious title of Finance Director of the Year – Public Sector in 2004 and is particularly committed to delivering financial performance through enhancing the quality of healthcare provision.

He took his first degree at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh and then obtained his MBA from Edinburgh University.

He has a strong commitment to CIPFA in both a voluntary capacity and as a Council member over a number of years. John was Chair of the Scottish Branch in 1999 and has been a Council member for the past six years chaired the International Strategy Board from 2011-14. He is the current President of CIPFA.

He was awarded the CBE in the 2015 Queens’ Birthday Honours.

He has undertaken Non Executive roles across both Public and Private Sectors and has presented at a number of international conferences on a wide range of current issues.

Outside work his work John is married with two children and his interests include golf, hill walking, photography, and malt whisky.
