Expert’s Corner with Samantha Liscio: #HealthSummit14

In anticipation of The 14th Annual Healthcare Summit, Reboot is excited to present “Expert’s Corner”, a series of blog posts featuring outstanding healthcare leaders and professionals who will be speaking at the summit later this month. Read on for a glimpse of what #HealthSummit14 is all about…

We had the opportunity to ask Samantha Liscio a few questions about his views and opinions on pressing healthcare topics leading up to the summit:

Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest obstacle facing healthcare leaders/decision makers today?

A: The growing number of aging patients and prevalence of chronic diseases will introduce new challenges across Canada’s healthcare system. To deliver effective, low-cost outcomes,  healthcare systems will need to drive large-scale transformation and empower patients to self-manage certain aspects of their care through personalization, transparency and self-service options.

Q:What are your current goals/objectives for shaping the future healthcare?

A: Digital technologies have radically changed service paradigms in multiple industry sectors.  Think about how Netflix and iTunes have quickly changed how we consume music and video content. Rising consumer demands and digitization will undoubtedly create a radical shift in how and where healthcare services are delivered. The hard part isn’t the technology, it’s redesigning the processes that underpin services, so that real-time data is analyzed and converted into actionable insight . As an example, telehealth video consultations only become more efficient than in-person consultations if clinicians don’t have to go through a set of new processes to complete them. Scheduling and billing systems and processes all need to flex to accommodate new ways of treating patients in their home, when appropriate, rather than the emergency room. Accenture’s goals are to demonstrate the ‘art of the possible’ with digital technologies and to assist in understanding what digital health care can look like for all Canadians.

Q: What are you most looking forward to at #HealthSummit14 in Kelowna, BC?

A: I am really looking forward to the keynote address on Digital Health – Managing the Complexity and Opportunity, and to the panel on Personalized Medicine: Supporting the Health and Well Being of Citizens, as well as the opportunities to network with other health care executives.
