Expert’s Corner with Dr. John Shepherd: #HealthSummit14

In anticipation of The 14th Annual Healthcare Summit, Reboot is excited to present “Expert’s Corner”, a series of blog posts featuring outstanding healthcare leaders and professionals who will be speaking at the summit later this month. Read on for a glimpse of what #HealthSummit14 is all about…

We had the opportunity to ask Dr. John Shepherd a few questions about his views and opinions on pressing healthcare topics leading up to the summit:

Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest obstacle facing healthcare leaders/decision makers today?

The biggest challenge/obstacle is to sort out where to apply funding to make a true difference in the health of Canadians.  There is a lot of money in the system but there continues to be a degree of inefficiency which contributes to over spending. Learning more about cause and prevention of disease, for example by using genomic research to predict who needs to be screened for a disease or to guide efficient therapeutic decisions, would be hugely important.

Q:What are your current goals/objectives for shaping the future healthcare?

Following on the above, I feel we need to understand more about all aspects of health and illness and then use this information to guide our policy makers, our providers, and our patients in their decisions.  Speaking from the perspective of an organization involved across all these areas, we need to ensure that our funding of research is clearly identified to improve overall health outcomes.

Q: What are you most looking forward to at #HealthSummit14 in Kelowna, BC?

I am looking forward to the presentations on the use of data to guide healthcare decisions.  I think this is very analogous to what I am going to present and that we in BC and Canada have a great opportunity to use patient data (respecting confidentiality of course!) to truly understand the health of our population and guide our research, funding, and clinical efforts.

Dr. John Shepherd is the Former Director of Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Program of BC, UBC / Board Member, Genome BC. Dr. Shepherd will be making a Keynote Address on Day 2 of the 14th Annual Healthcare Summit.
